 PARKING-E

VEHICLE PARKING SENSOR SYSTEM

The system alerts a driver to the distance between the rear of a vehicle and an obstruction while reversing. It is precision designed by Canadian engineers and manufactured to the highest quality standards. Various display and sensor type/quantity options are available.

Introduction

The system alerts the driver to the distance of obstacles while reversing. It comprises two or more sensors, a central control processor and a display panel or Audible Alert. The optional display panel produces an audible and visual warning. These instructions apply to all Parking-e systems, including Audible Alert only systems and models with Display Units. There is a range of different sensors available. Please ensure to read the sections that apply to the product you have purchased.

We recommend that when you first receive this kit that you temporarily wire it up to the vehicle power supply to satisfy yourself that the kit performs as desired, before fitting the sensors and optional display. This step helps diagnose any potential problems following the installation of the kit to the vehicle.

Features

· Compatible with 12V electrics (24V versions available on request)

●3-character digital display to show the obstacle distance (Display Models)

●4 warning alarm indicates the car rear obstacle distance

●2 direction indicator lamps show the direction of obstacle (Display Models)

Installation Diagram

The RED cable (+) should be connected to the positive feed wire for the vehicle reversing light using the connector provided.

The BLACK cable (-) should be secured to a good earth on the vehicle.

Installation of Sensors

There are two main types of sensors, Adhesive and Recessed.  The sensor and display cables must not be cut or reduced in length.

1. Adhesive Sensors

This type of sensor does not require holes in the bumper and are best installed under the rear light units, but above the bumper. The centre sensor (if supplied) can be installed on the boot or tailgate.

The surface should be clear of grease or polish and the adhesive will be at maximum contact after 48 hours. Should it be necessary to remove a sensor, this can be accomplished by carefully rising with the edge of a credit card.

1.1.1          Ensure that there is no obstacle within the sensing angle (90º - see diagram below) otherwise, the system may function incorrectly.

1.1.2          The surface should be near-vertical; otherwise the accuracy be affected. See the diagram below:

1.3.1          Mounting of Self Adhesive Sensors:

Sensor must placed horizontal, as shown in the diagram

2. Recessed Sensors

There are two types of recessed sensor available, “V” Type (Small Round) and “S” Type (Shield Shape). To install this type of sensor, holes must be drilled in the bumper casing.

·         “V” Type (Small Round) Sensors require 20mm Holes

·         “S” Type (Shield) Sensors require 22mm Holes

A Recessed Sensor Fitting Kit consisting of 20mm or 22mm Fitting Kit and Polishing Head is available from the accessories department at www.parking-e.co.uk

Sensor Type:  S (shield type) or   V (Small Round):

Tools required to fit recessed sensors

Particular care should be taken before drilling to ensure that there are no obstructions or brackets behind the bumper casing and that sufficient clearance exists for the sensor body. After having drilled the hole, the sharp edge of the drilled holes should be polished smooth. If it is necessary to secure the sensors, silicon sealant (NOT Glue) can be used on the sensor body (avoiding the front part of sensor).

·         If the sensors are to be colour coded to match the bumper, spray 2 or 3 light coats. Metallic colours can be finished with a lacquer coat. Only use spray paint, paint applied with a brush must not be used.

Installing recessed type sensors:

The “S” Type (Shield) sensors may be installed with the thick flange at either the top or bottom, to angle the sensors 10º up or down, according to the height of the installation and the slope of the bumper surface. Optionally, the plastic washers may be installed behind the “S” Type sensors to compensate for a greater slope.

The “V” Type (Small Round) sensors are more sensitive and should be installed with the thinner edge upwards and thicker edge downwards, resulting in the sensor facing away from the ground. This is necessary to prevent the sensors detecting the ground and feeding back false alarms.

The sensors should not be mounted lower than 50cm from ground level.

Set the sensor angle:

If H = 50 – 70 cm place the sensor surface 10º upwards

If H is greater than 70 cm place the sensor surface 10º downwards

(H = Height of Sensor from the ground)

 Horizontal positioning of sensors:

2 sensors 3 Sensors 4 Sensors

Step 1 - Install the sensor into bumper     step 2 complete                View of sensor

3. Commercial Vehicle and Motorhome Installations

Installation of sensors for these vehicle types can use the under bumper bracket as show in the diagram, this bracket is available from the accessories department at www.parking-e.co.uk

For long vehicles, a 5 metre extension cable for the sound/display unit is available from the accessories department at www.parking-e.co.uk

Testing

First step:         Before routing the display panel cable, connect directly to the control processor.

Second step:     Switch on ignition and select reverse, The car reverse light should illuminate.

Third step          Plug one sensor into the appropriate socket (the sensor cables are marked L, M & R). When you are standing 1.5M from the sensor, the display panel should show the correct distance. Repeat the procedure for the remaining sensors. After testing all the sensors, leave the sensors connected.

In the unlikely event of malfunction, re-check the connections and the position of sensors to ensure that they are not directed towards the ground.

Installation of Display Panel

Install the display panel (if supplied) in a suitable position inside the car, then install the cable or the processor following the path of the car wiring loom into the boot. Particular care should be taken to avoid damage to the connector.

Routine Maintenance

Should the sensor surface be covered with dirt or sand, clean it carefully with water. Do not pressure wash or use abrasive or metal objects to clean the sensors.

Troubleshooting

The system is designed to "beep" twice when reverse gear is engaged (and disengaged). The system is performing a self test and also informs the driver that the system is active.

The most common installation problem is when the system constantly beeps, the possible reasons are:

(1) The sensors are mounted too low to the ground and they are picking up the ground causing the buzzer to constantly sound. The recommended minimum height is 50cm from the ground when mounted on a vertical surface, the sensors built in taper means that the sensors face away from the ground. Fitting sensors lower than the recommended height will cause the problem described. The “S” Type Sensors can be mounted lower when used with the supplied angled rubber washer.

(2) The holes drilled for the sensors are too small, the increased pressure on the sides of the sensors causes the sensors to short out and the result is a constant beeping. The sensors must be removed and the holes made slightly larger.

(3) Some glues can damage the internal workings of a sensor, even plastic glues can cause excessive heat and melt the sensor internally. It should not be necessary to use glue to mount the sensors and we do not recommend the use of glue for this purpose. If it is necessary to secure the sensors in place then silicon sealant should be used.

(4) You have a faulty sensor. You should test each sensor, one at a time, by unplugging all the sensors except the one that is being tested. The system will continue to work on a single sensor and does not need all the sensors plugged in to function. If you find a single sensor then return it to be exchanged.
